August TBR, aka my impromptu N.E.W.T. TBR (including a new tag schedule!)

Caidyn's TBR

This is the last month of my insanely ambitious TBR. I’m seriously going to try to calm myself down next month because, guess what? Classes start up again at the end of this one! And this ambitious TBR now includes me deciding that I’m going to do the N.E.W.T.

Also, I’ve decided that I’m going to try a new schedule for book tags. Stay tuned to the end because that’s where it’ll be! (Also, it’ll be on our home page.)

N.E.W.T. TBR!!

I’ve never taken part in this, and I’m super excited. I had my eye on O.W.L. this year, but didn’t do it. And now I thought “what the hell” and just decided to go for it. Might as well, right?

Out of all the professions they had available, I decided to go with a Hogwarts Professor! On brand for me. Even more on brand is that I decided to be a History of Magic professor. That means I have to get an O in the subject I want to teach (i.e. History of Magic), an E in Defense Against the Dark Arts, and two additional A’s in subjects of my choice. My choices are Transfiguration and Potions!

History of Magic

A – read a fantasy

Gideon the Ninth (The Ninth House, #1)

I’ve had my eye on this one since it was announced by And that means I’m so fucking excited that I got my hands on an ARC and can read it. It’s also one I need to read this month and fits for the prompt!

E – read a book with a map

Shadows of Self (Mistborn, #5)

All of his books have maps, so this is a safe bet. I also want to read this to see if I’m really going to enjoy wave two of the Mistborn series. I was okay withΒ The Alloy of Law and it was good, but didn’t measure up.

O – reread a favorite OR read a classic

The Great Gatsby

Technically, I’m doing both here! I count this as one of my favorite books even though I honestly, I don’t remember when I read this the first time. But I did read it in my senior year of high school for AP Lit. Had to write a stupid paper about colors. I wanted to die. But, the book is good and I want to see if I still like it!

Defense Against the Dark Arts

A – a book that’s black under the cover

Doctor Sleep (The Shining, #2)

It’s Stephen King, so all of his books are black under the cover. (And just black/bleak inside.) I read this way back when it first came out and really enjoyed it. Now that the movie’s been announced, I really need to reread it.

E – 1st book you remembered from your TBR

Kingdom of Souls

I don’t know why this is the first one I remembered, but it is. I’m very excited to read this! It sounds very good and yeah. Gimme that diverse fantasy.

A – read a book with LGBTQ+ rep

I Was Born for This

One of the MCs in this is a transman, which I always need more of in my life. I desperately have wanted to read this one. Finally decided to get it for myself! I cannot wait to read it.

A – read your friend’s favorite book

How to Make a Wish

Friendship is messaging your friend early in the morning needing to know a book I haven’t read yet that she loves. And, as usual, Chantel came through with this one!

Now, that’s my N.E.W.T. TBR. I also have other books that I need to read this month. This should be expected by now!

Ah, hello insane ARC list (some of which were included in the N.E.W.T. TBR). All of these are September releases that I need to get through, so here goes the insanity.

The Lady Rogue

I was sold when I saw that this is like Gentleman’s Guide. I mean, I have my things and that’s definitely one of them.

Serpent & Dove (Serpent & Dove, #1)

Another one that I’m totally intrigued by and very glad that I have! It sounds so interesting. Also, that cover is amazing.

Mother Knows Best

I love thrillers and I think this one is gonna be a good one.

A Treason of Thorns

Love that cover and I love the sound of this book. Gotta love magic and stuff that sounds like a play on historical fiction.

The Grace Year

I grabbed this one when it was Read Now on Netgalley. I’m very intrigued by it. Kinda gives meΒ Girls with Sharp SticksΒ vibes.

The 24/6

I really want to get better at unplugging myself. Each time I do it, I feel so much better. But, I need to develop techniques of how to do it. And I think this book will be helpful.

The Tenth Girl

Diverse horror?? That cover has got me going and I cannot wait to read this one.

His Hideous Heart

Ah, Edgar. I love you and your crazy stories. And these are all YA retellings! A few of my favorite authors have short stories in it, so I cannot wait to dive into this.

Following in the Footsteps of Henry Tudor: A Historical Guide from Pembroke to Bosworth

I saw this on Netgalley one day and I pounced on it. I really want to know more about Henry VII, but there just aren’t many books out there. I’m hoping that this will be a good one!

We Speak in Storms

I was invited to do a blog tour that includes this book. Not expecting that! So, last-minute addition since I’m excited to be doing my first-ever tour.

One week I did a major purge of my shelves. I got rid of books that I’ll never reread. Some of the books I pulled off were classics. Aka, books I’ve read and enjoyed but I don’t know if I want to keep them. I’m rereading these four to see if I want to keep them. I’m going to read about one a week, including The Great Gatsby, since all of these are so small.

The Lion in Winter

I read this in 2015 and gave it four stars. It’s historical fiction and yeah. We’ll see how it measures up!

The Crucible

I read this in my sophomore year of high school (2011-2012) and thought it was really good. I’ve read it since then but I haven’t read it in years.

The Garden of Eden

This is the only book by Ernest Hemingway that I like. No joke. I hate everything but this book. But, I haven’t read it since 2013 and I want to see if I still feel that way about it.

I’m trying to do better at reading horror this year. I haven’t been in the mood for it, I guess! But, I’m getting into it again. These are books I’ve been dying to read/reread lately (Doctor Sleep was here until I moved it up).

A Dark Matter

I’ve never read anything by Straub, but I’ve owned this book forever. I also know that he and Stephen King have worked together before, so I find this really promising.

Historical Women

Yes, still pushing through this! These are a couple books I own and have wanted to read for a while.

The Wives of Henry VIII

I’m on a big Fraser kick. And I have a feeling this will be the best one I read on the topic.

Josephine: A Life of the Empress

France isn’t a big area of history that I delve into, but I own this one and I found Josephine very interesting when I read a Napoleon biography.

And, as usual, the random books I’m also looking to read that aren’t included in my challenges.

Our Own Private Universe

A couple of months ago, I was on a big Robin Talley kick. I got this book while in Portland and I want to read this one soon.

Little & Lion

This one’s been on my mental list of books I’ve heard good things about but I’m not sure if I want to read them. Finally decided that I am going to read this.

Like a Love Story

Another book that I want to read because it’s diverse and queer and yeah. Plus Mackenzi blurbed it.

These Witches Don't Burn (These Witches Don't Burn, #1)

I’m very excited about this book and I just want to devour it. I have a feeling I’ll read it pretty fast because it’s small.

Lost and Wanted

I was set to do a buddy read for this one back in May, but I dropped out and canceled it because of my sister. This one deals a lot with grief. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but I wasn’t ready to tackle it.

The Golden Hour

I got this as a BotM choice one month because I saw it had the Duke and Duchess of Windsor as characters. Royalty is my kryptonite.

Sea Witch Rising (Sea Witch #2)

I’m so damn excited for this one. I’m also going to the release party for it on the day it’s published!

One of Us: The Story of a Massacre in Norway -- and Its Aftermath

I got into a huge true crime mood at the end of July, so I impulsively picked this one up. And omfg it is amazing. If you have to read any true crime book, I highly recommend this one. It’s fantastic and I’m anticipating that I’ll finish it up within days of this blog post.

Jade War (The Green Bone Saga, #2)

I started this as soon as I could get my hands on a copy. Aka, when it came out. And it’s a thick one so I’m making my way through it a bit at a time! Utterly fantastic.

The new schedule! Not much is changing, tbh. But, I’ve decided to take on a couple more tags and switch the days out on some things.

  • Tuesdays: Top Ten Tuesday
  • Wednesdays: WWW Wednesday
  • Thursdays: Down the TBR Hole and random tag
    • Switch of per each every other week
  • Fridays: First Lines Friday and First Impression Friday
    • I first saw FIF on Kristin’s blog and now I want to steal it. Switching off on each one each week.

Talk to me!
What books are you most excited to read in August?
Do we share any on this TBR?
Is this my most insane TBR yet?

    • Me too! I think it’s going to be fun as something to break up the tags.

I always get a bit nervous about rereading it. But I have the Audible version that has Jake Gyllenhaal reading it.
