30 Days of Pride – Day 11

Today is a very special day. It’s the day after the season finale of Gentleman Jack aired on HBO and now I will attempt to talk about how much I love this show. It may or may not be coherent.

When I first heard about Gentleman Jack on Twitter, HBO had my subscription. Even though the last season of Game of Thrones was going on, THIS was why I subscribed to HBO again. I find it hard to think of any shows that revolve around an openly queer character taking place in the 1800s. I’m not talking about queer side characters, but a main character who is queer.

Gentleman Jack is about Anne Lister who was a real person and the events of the show are pulled straight from her diaries. She wrote it in code and it was deciphered and revealed her attraction to the same sex. I’m positive there were queer women in history, but it is very rare that they themselves wrote about it. The fact that this show is about real people and two women, Anne Lister and Ann Walker, who did indeed get married means a lot to me.

I could talk about other shows featuring queer women and f/f relationships, but they were just laying the foundation so that this show could work. I’m in love with this show. There is so much fucking love put into it. I’ve seen the first three episodes about 3 times each and I fully plan to rewatch the season when I can. I don’t think there’s going to be a time when I’m tired of this show. My hope for the future is that this show lays the foundation for more stories like this.

Look at these angels.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, representation means everything. I can’t wait to see more episodes of Gentleman Jack, but in the meantime, I will be watching the episodes I do have again and again.
