Put it short and simple, I didn’t like this book.
The issues Chantel and I had were, mainly, boring/dull/typical characters and that there was no plot.
However, I decided that I wanted to give this series another go. I remembered most of the first book, so I decided I’d read a quick spoiler summary of it and jump into this one.
And, I have to say, that was a great choice. I remember reading the first book, getting confused about how clean the ending was considering there were two more books, and then realizing that it was just shitty planning. Schwab didn’t really have a direction for the first book and it morphed into a series.
This read, I didn’t have the same anger I did with how amazing and fast paced the first book was to this second book that was so lackluster that I DNFed it at 80%. I appreciate that. I also was able to go in with relatively new eyes and was able to get into it.
I found myself appreciating Lila more as a character. I could see Kell’s angst more and appreciate it. I still don’t like them. My message to Lila stands as this:
Yet, then I was 50% into the book and nothing happened.
Then, two chapters from the ending, something FINALLY HAPPENED. And it took around 95% of the book (or around 500 pages) for it to get there. That made this book utterly pointless in the long run.
Magic games were interesting, but it ended in such a boring way and, really, had nothing to do with the plot besides a way for Lila and Kell to see each other again and for us to see Lila’s magical development. That was the only point of it. That means 500 pages of nothing besides character development for characters I don’t like.
Do you know how annoying that is?
I’m still infuriated by this book because while Schwab has amazing ideas and is a great writer, she still sucks with characters, pacing, and creating a lasting plot. I’ve read quite a few of her books and I have that same issue each and every time, which makes me sigh and grit my teeth as everyone tells me how awesome she is at everything.
This book was just too long with nothing going on in it. I can’t believe it was published. By the time I got to the real action, my mood was “it’s 10pm and I’ve wanted to go to sleep since 7:30 and I stayed up to read this shit??” Not the best mood to finish the book, so I absorbed basically nothing of the cliffhanger.
Will I read the final book? Yes.
Will I like it? Probably not.
Am I the only one who doesn’t like this series?
What are your unpopular opinions??
