First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!
Captain Crozier comes up on deck to find his ship under attack by celestial ghosts. Above him — above Terror — shimmering folds of light lunged but then quickly withdraw like the colourful arms of aggressive but ultimately uncertain spectres. Ectoplasmic skeletal fingers extend toward the ship, open, prepare to grasp, and pull back.
Admittedly, if you all have seen the TV show or are savvy on titles, you’ll likely already know this one. Either way, I’m so damn excited about reading this book because it’s been on my TBR for ages and the TV show kicked my ass into gear to finally read this.
As I said, super excited. It looks so good and, having read a little bit of it, I can tell that I’m going to enjoy it. And might even finish it before I planned to.
Have you read this? Have you seen the show?
What do you think of it based on those lines?
