Top Ten Tuesday – Bingeworthy TV Shows

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018!

Y’all, I love TV. I’m one of those peoples who always is watching something. No joke. I’m constantly watching something. And these are just a few of them! I won’t be providing links/pictures for this TTT, though!

  • Supernatural

Oh man. This show. I have major issues with it — lack of diversity, killing of any diverse characters, too cis-het male, should have stopped at season 5 — but I still love this show. I still binge it like crazy. Mainly because I think Jared and Jensen are fantastic actors. Although, seasons 7 and 8 suck. And I haven’t watched seasons 12 and 13. Yeah.

  • Bates Motel

Another one I haven’t finished!! But, I really like this one, too. I love horror, if you can’t tell. Season two and three aren’t great, but season four just draws you right in like crazy.

  • Hannibal

Okay. This show. This. Show. It’s ugh. So good. I mean, it diversified the show to have more POC characters and queer ones as well. Can I talk more about this show? Yes. Because I’ve already written a post about it.

  • Killing Eve

Another great show! You have a show that’s mainly women and women doing what most would call a “man’s job”. Queer women, women of color, and great plots. I screamed every episode because it was so good.

  • The Fall

This is a quieter show but just as good as the others! It’s a mystery that’s not really a mystery because you know from the start who the killer is. It’s so pensive and amazing.

  • American Gods

Yes, I’ve found another way to bring this up. Surprised? I binged the first season in one day. I sat on my ass for over 10 hours watching it and it was the best choice of my life. If you didn’t like the book, I think you should try the show because it has a very different feel to it.

  • Doctor Who

Like Supernatural, I have issues with this show. I don’t like Moffat one bit. I think he was the worst thing to happen to the show. But, I love it. I cry when I watch it. I love all the characters. And I’m desperately waiting for my beloved Thirteen and her diverse crew!

  • Orphan Black

More female characters everyone. Tatiana Maslany is a genius. She carried the weight of the show, playing five main characters and a million other side characters. She’s a genius and I miss this show so much.

  • Dirk Gently

I binged the first season of this in one day and it was a ball. I’m planning on watching this during my master’s program because it’s just so fun! I’m sad it got canceled but both seasons are on Hulu!

  • Whitechapel

Lastly, another mystery show that I love. It takes crimes from the past and, in a way, recreates them. It’s so fun to see the history of Whitechapel come aline in a very real way. Only problem is that it didn’t get picked up so it leaves on a huge cliffhanger that will never be resolved.

That’s it! Those are some of my favorite shows to binge on and all of these are streaming somewhere. (Except American Gods. You gotta buy Starz to get it. Sad face.)

Talk to me!
Have you watched these?
What are some of your favorite shows to binge?

  1. I keep hearing that Killing Eve is so incredible, I need to watch that one! I really liked the first two (I think) seasons of the Fall but the last one disappointed me. I loved the format of knowing who the killer was all along though, and when it was good it was great. Great list here!

    • God, yes. It’s so annoying that they have great characters that are diverse and then they underutilize them or, well, just kill them off. I mean, I can count the amount of diverse characters on one hand each for both Doctor Who and SPN.

      • Don’t get me started on that damn show. I enjoyed season one and loved season two, but seasons three and four were the worst thing ever. I actually couldn’t bring myself to watch the fourth season, but I read all about it and it sounds like I would have screamed at my computer about it.

      • A huge theme whenever Moffat’s involved as the showrunner in any show is that he gets fucking ridiculous. It’s like he has these *~great ideas~* and everyone’s too chicken shit to call him out as being fucking stupid. I mean, the shit with making someone psychotic and psychopathic???? UGH. That’s literally impossible and I’m sure that Chantel will roll her eyes to the grave because I bitch about that all the time. I know exactly who you’re talking about and that pissed me off. The fourth season was so incoherent.

      • I agree. That’s actually very true and a lot of people don’t realize it. My own IRL friends often complain about how Moffat “broke their heart” when in reality he doesn’t actually DO anything new or even super emotional.

      • The first few times, it’s emotional. I admit, I was upset with Amy and Rory in DW when they left because it was a well-done episode overall. However, he’s a one-trick pony. It’s all the same when you objectively look at the plots and characters. All the female characters are motherly, uber sexy, and/or vaguely manic. The men are all cis-het and white. The villains are, all, vaguely psychotic but also geniuses. All the stories hinge around some BIG DEEP CONFUSING plot that isn’t well-explained and ends with some pointless thing to fix the plot holes he put in.

      • I forgot about Amy and Rory, that killed me. That was an excellent episode. But I totally agree about the characters and plots! Before Pearl, Martha was the only companion of color and honestly I’m still angry about how underdeveloped she was. Not to mention, the 10th and 11th parting scenes were so different? I feel like 11’s was just kinda sped through. And YES his plots are terrible! He botched a lot of the Sherlock plots and DW got so cheesy in some parts it was ridiculous.

      • Omg, Pearl was so, so, so underdeveloped. I liked Martha and I get more out of her character each time I watch series three, but it was such a shame. A lesbian woman of color?? But then I got mad because I know how Moffat is.

OMG YES. I was so mad about Eleven’s departure. I think it was somewhat in character, but it also felt like such a disservice to Matt Smith.

Series two and the Christmas special were the best episodes of Sherlock. But other than that? Nope. Some of my favorite episodes of DW are Moffat episodes, but only before he was the showrunner.

      • I don’t know about that since Moffat wasn’t the showrunner at that point. He picked it up with Eleven. But, I think he did quite a few episodes with David’s Doctor, too.

So do I! I need something going on and I need it to creep me out.

  2. Omg I love Bates Motel! And Hannibal! That was unexpectedly good. Too bad it was canceled though. Dirk Gently is amazing. I bought the first book because I enjoyed the show so much. Still haven’t read it though haha. Too bad that was canceled too. Why do all the great shows get canceled? Sigh.

    • I still haven’t finished Bates Motel! But, I will. One day. When I’m in the mood. Hannibal, though, is amazing. I need to finish Dirk Gently but, personally, I’m not a reader of Douglas Adam’s stuff, but I did like the show!

I hate that the good shows that are maybe not so simplistic get carried on for ages, then great, complex shows get nixed.

      • Oh I binged the heck out of Bates Motel. Then I had to wait for the last season to premiere haha. So worth it though. You’re in for a treat with that one!

I know! They’re dark, with so much depth. Yet get cancelled so soon. It’s frustrating.

      • It’s a show that got way better as time went by. I thought the fourth season was excellent but the first three were okay. So, I’m excited to watch it when I’m in the mood!

It is. Because, I want dark, complex shows. That’s my preference.

  3. I’ve only seen Bates Motel (gorgeous), but I will check out your other recs. I find it so hard to give new shows a chance, I don’t know what my deal is. I’m content rewatch my favorite comedies over and over again. so I need to broaden my horizons. It’s also the perfect time of year for some new mystery-crime shows!

    • I get that. I’m a rewatcher, so I rewatch more shows than watch new stuff. Right now, I’m rewatching American Horror Story and, I think, Chantel and I are going to watch a season or two together. But, it is such a great time of year for the creepier stuff! Let me know if you try anything and like (or dislike) it!
