For our first tag in June, we’ve decided to create our own questions based on the Mid-Year freakout tag except our tag isn’t just about books, but we even talk about movies, TV shows, and songs.
We’ll just get the tagging out of the way and say that we’ll tag everyone who wants to try this out! We’d be honored if you decided to do it.
Caidyn will be in blue.
Chantel will be in purple.
1. Where are you on your Goodreads challenge? Ahead or behind?
Currently, I’m ahead! By, around, 13 books. I’ve already bumped it up from 100 books to 150.
Believe it or not, I’m actually ahead. I can’t believe I’m actually ahead. I’ve been ahead since January when I read several books and I’m still three books ahead of my challenge. So, I’m not too worried.
OMG YOU’RE AHEAD??? So proud. I feel like a proud parent.
I KNOW. I’ve been ahead for six months.
2. Have you really been reading your Top Ten (remember to link) books of the year?
Kind of?? I made this question and even I feel attacked by it.
But, I’ve DNFed 3 of them. I’m currently reading The Queen Mother and I’m going to read another big book soon. So. Kind of. I’m kind of accomplishing it but not really.
*runs off to check list* Same. I had to do this too.
I’ve read one book off my top ten list.
ONE BOOK. FAIL.

3. Are you going to change some of your Top Tens halfway through?
YES. I’m definitely taking out a goddamned Alison Weir book about Elizabeth I. I do not trust that ho to go anywhere near her. Instead, I want to add in The Girl Who Smiled at Beads by Clemantine Wamariya. I got it for one of my BotM boxes and I really, really want to read it.
Actually, I made a pretty good list for myself. I would like to trade out Graceling by Kristin Cashore for Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi because I’ve heard nothing but good things and it just sounds like a beautiful, heart-wrenching book. I get the feeling it might be one of those life-changing books.
Having read Homegoing, it’s fucking good.
4. What are your top five books so far this year?
Probably: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, The Cruel Prince, Our Kind of Cruelty, The Best We Could Do, and Being Mortal.
Easy. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, How to Make a Wish, We Are Okay, Leah on the Offbeat, and Circe.
And, I’m going to be reading We Are Okay later this month!
Which I really hope you like.
5. Any new releases you’re excited for?
omg I’m blanking on any. OH. The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy. That one for sure.
YAS to The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy. I’m so excite for that one. I’m also very excited to read The Navigator’s Touch by Julia Ember which is the sequel to The Seafarer’s Kiss which I loved last year.
Never heard of your last two.
Maybe you should look it up, it has a fat, bisexual mermaid as a main character and Loki is genderqueer. I’m pretty sure I told you about it yesterday when we video chatted.
Oooohhhh. I didn’t catch the name of the book. So. I guess I have to add another book to my list.
I might not have said it, but I think you might like it. It’s short and there’s an f/f romance.
6. Favorite character of a new (either released this year or new to you) book this year?
Evelyn Fucking Hugo. That’s all.
You wouldn’t even know about Kween Evelyn Hugo if it wasn’t for me. Other than the Kween, I love Leah from Leah on the Offbeat and Eva from How to Make a Wish.
I’d heard about the book beforehand but you read it first. For once.
You didn’t know how amazing it was until I read it.
7. What’s a book you regret not having read so far this year?
I’m a bit ashamed that I haven’t read The Lineline Signal by RoAnna Sylver. I read her debut, Chameleon Moon, years ago and I own the sequel and ugh. Haven’t done it yet.
For me, it would easily be Inkmistress by Audrey Coulthurst. I’m so ashamed.
Never heard of it.
YES, YOU HAVE I TOLD YOU ABOUT IT.
I DON’T REMEMBER IT.
UGHHHHHHHHHH.
8. What are your favorite TV shows/movies you’ve watched this year?
I really loved watching I, Tonya. Black Mirror was also great. Same with Killing Eve. Omg that show was damn good. Also, the first season of Broadchurch was great.
Killing motherfucking Eve! I did like being able to catch up on Black Mirror and I have to say that I really loved Deadpool 2.
9. What do you really want to watch before the year is out?
I want to watch the second season of Queer Eye; rewatch Killing Eve, Hannibal, and The Fall; and watch some new shows with Chantel. Oh, and Lady Bird. I want to watch that movie since Chantel wouldn’t shut up about it.
YAS QUEER EYE! It’s so good if you guys haven’t checked it out. I’m excited to see how Pose goes since the first episode was really good, but I’m wary of Ryan Murphy. I would also like to see Bohemian Rhapsody. I’m so excited to see it, I might see it opening night.
Also, Lady Bird is amazing AND WAS TOTALLY SNUBBED AT THE OSCARS.
YAS POSE. THAT WAS A GREAT FIRST EPISODE.
Yes, it was!
10. What’s one song you’ve become obsessed with?
“Back to Black” by Amy Winehouse. Ugh. So good. I know it’s about her relationship with her boyfriend, but I always listen to it through the lens of her struggle with alcoholism. Which killed her.
Holy shit that song is good. We lost a great artist with Amy Winehouse and it makes me very sad.
My song is “Love on the Brain” by Rihanna. I totally missed this song when it originally came out because I don’t listen to the radio and new music, but I heard it and not only does it play in my head constantly but I think of my murder wives when it does.
11. What are your favorite songs/albums so far?
÷ by Ed Sheeran and Joanne by Lady Gaga. Fucking love those albums. I can listen to them on end.
A quick breakdown of the way I listen to music, it usually isn’t by album. I listen to individual songs, not whole albums. Lately, I’ve been listening to songs I really liked when I was in middle/high school.
A brief insight into my old musical taste
- “My Place” by Nelly
- “She Wolf” by Shakira (great video too)
- “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira
- “SOS” by Rihanna
- “Nine in the Afternoon” by Panic! at the Disco
Panic! at the Disco is great. I love their new one “Say Amen”.
We suck at people, so literally tag yourself in this if you want to evaluate your year in books, TV, movies, and music. And partially shame yourself.
How’s your year going?
Are you accomplishing all you hoped to?
What were your 2018 goals for books/TV/movies/music?
This tag looks like a lot of fun! I love that you ask about movies and tv shows and music in addition to books. I think I’ll do this one! 🙂

I’ve been looking to write something like this but couldn’t figure it out. I’ll definitely be doing this tag soon.
I have accomplished absolutely nothing because I’m a mood reader and I suck at following my goals 😦

I am the exact same way. I read so much in January that I was ahead of my reading challenge and yet I’ve read very little since. I’ve gotten down on myself about it before, but that’s part of the reason we include things other than books on our blog. 😁 – Chantel

My reading has been slower this year and I’m constantly leaving books unfinished halfway through. It’s definitely a good idea to include other topics as well

I do the same thing. I have a few books on hold and I don’t know whether to give up on them or give them another shot. But branching out definitely helped us! – Chantel

I’m so glad you liked the tag! We wanted to do some sort of freak out tag and there was nothing out there, which surprised me tbh.
Also, I’m 100% a mood reader, too. I’m pretty good at following a schedule, but I have to be in the mood for the books or it’s not gonna work.

If I’m not in the right mood for reading a certain book I’m not finishing it. I try to go back to it once or twice because I miss out on books that I actually enjoy.

I do the same thing! I’ve found that if I force myself, I get in a slump. And I don’t want that. I’ve done the same thing with books, like the Illuminae series.
